In his famous Ted talk, Simon Sinek suggests that the best companies start with why.
This is because people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. This is especially true for startups where the challenges are immense, the financial risk great and the road to success long. Without a compelling why, a startup will not succeed.
Today, I share our why.
It all started on Saturday 22nd September 2012, when 29-year-old Jill Meagher went missing in Melbourne, Australia 450 meters from her house. Six days later, Police would charge 41-year-old Adrian Ernest Bayley with her rape and murder. He pleaded guilty to all charges.
Within 90 minutes of the news, social media exploded with over 12 million tweets mentioning her name. The country was in mourning.
Amongst those was Christian Beck, the entrepreneur, and owner of legal software company Leap Legal. Already familiar with what it takes to build a profitable technology company, Beck set out to create a security product.
“At the time, police had to knock on door-to-door to get surveillance videos,” Beck said.
“If even one in 10 had a cloud-based integrated surveillance system, it would have been easier to share and taken less time for the police to identify what happened.”
That’s when Beck realised that traditional home security and surveillance was out of reach for most homes due to high set up costs, clunky hardware and inferior software.
In early 2013, Beck launched the first iteration of Cammy, called MyMinder which originally included a panic button, cloud based video surveillance and crime reporting tool.
Beck soon found “MyMinder” was too complicated and perhaps ahead of its time. He decided to remove the panic button and focus on making beautiful software for existing IP cameras and named it Cammy.
If Jill Meagher’s story was the spark for bringing Cammy to life, customer feedback is what helped propel Cammy to solve some of the biggest problems with traditional home security.
Beck soon hired additional staff for his development team and got to work on the product that Cammy is today.
Since launching in Australia in 2014, we now have over 30,000 active accounts across the globe and some amazing customer success stories.
The product itself continues to evolve with more and more customers using Cammy for more than just security. From checking on the kids, to monitoring pets, Cammy has many use cases.
Bringing Cammy to market and growing it has not been easy, but having a strong purpose has helped and will continue to help us overcome the biggest challenges.
With more features on the way, the future is exciting.
Giving you peace of mind is why we exist.
This comes from knowing if:
Plus so much more.
This is what camera based security provides and it’s why we do what we do.
