According to DailyMail, a Ministry of Justice spokesman recognised that “we are aware of the distress the disappearance of a pet can cause, especially if there are suspicions it has been stolen”, however the punishment for dog theft is still deemed no more serious than stealing any other possessions, like say your TV.
The main reasons for these dog thefts are financial – thieves can get a lot of money from stealing puppies and dogs. It has been said that thieves are targeting Staffordshire bull terriers and tiny designer breeds, like miniature French bulldogs and pugs which are popular with celebrities.
These dogs have become very popular and are in high demand in the UK. So naturally, they’re quite hard to find and can be very expensive. For example, a British bulldog is about £1,800 for a puppy. It seems that thieves are targeting female dogs as female bulldog can net thousands of pounds worth of puppies.
